The Soul of A Software Start-up

Of course there are many contributing factors that lead to the success of any software start-up, there probably are formulas and algorithms employed by many of the Silicon Valley venture capital firms that can calculate the probability of your success, your valuation pre and post revenue, etc… I even found a formula you can use to calculate your earnings potential when joining a start up as an employee [link]. But beyond the mechanics of the business and financial aspects, there is what lies at the heart of any successful start-up… its people. Your start up team should function in a manner akin to the ancient Greek Hoplite phalanx that moves as one cohesive unit, making them unbeatable on the battlefield of today’s highly competitive marketplace. This is what I like to call the F + T * F coefficient… or the Faith, Trust, and Fortitude coefficient which must be maintained at all costs for a start-up to be successful. Big Data… Byte Sized Software

Recently, I have had the opportunity to talk to wide spectrum of people within the AEC/FM community. From projects using Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), Lean Construction, and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) in its full glory to project teams utilizing Building Information Models (BIM) for the first time. The primary goal of these new project delivery methodologies of course is to increase productivity and reduce waste, and many of these projects have already seen the benefits from reduced change orders, RFI’s, cost, schedules, and more efficient O&M for facilities. However, it seems that many individuals on the project team do not perceive they are getting the personal productivity gains they expect from these new processes & technologies; depending on their role on a project they actually see an increase in the amount of work they need to perform in order to accommodate them. This may explain the reluctance of many people to adopt these new processes and the resistance you may encounter when championing these initiatives within your own organization.

IPD for AEC Software

“Integrated Project Delivery, is a collaborative alliance of people, systems, business structures and practices into a process that harnesses the talents and insights of all participants to optimize project results, increase value to the owner, reduce waste, and maximize efficiency through all phases of design, fabrication, and construction”[1]

AEC Standards… Meet Neural Networks

One topic of rather hot debate within the AEC industry is the codification of standards for describing the building data model. These differing codification standards and data structures are necessary as they address the various needs of stakeholders during different phases of the building’s life cycle. MSI, Uniformat, Omniformat, IFC, COBie, etc… are necessary to decompose the building model into compatible classifications that are useful for the specialized purposes of the different stakeholders of a project team. However, it is possible for all the standards to co-exist, with multiple models of varying levels of detail, and different codification standards in harmony. The issue has been in the approach to the problem so far, which is usually an explicit association of the data (1 model element <-> 1 parameter) found in most of the applications we use in the AEC industry today. However, in reality it resembles more of a complex network of implicit relationships… enter the Neural Network.
